The Winter Season: Mr. Golec’s ELA Classroom
This winter, our ELA curriculum shifts gears to challenge students with new genres and deeper analytical tasks. Across all four grades, my goal remains the same: to foster a genuine love for reading while mastering the communication skills essential for academic success. All units and lesson plans continue to be meticulously aligned with Massachusetts State and Diocese Standards.
ELA 5: Loser by Jerry Spinelli
In fifth grade, we are diving into Jerry Spinelli’s heartwarming and eventful novel, Loser. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Zinkoff, students will explore themes of individuality and perseverance.

Focus: Strengthening independent thinking and creative writing.

Vocabulary: Expanding our lexicon through the Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop (Level Blue).

Goal: Building a confident foundation in literacy, empowering students to express their unique ideas with clarity.
ELA 6: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Sixth graders are embarking on an epic journey through Middle-earth with J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic, The Hobbit. This unit serves as our gateway into formal literary analysis.

Focus: Analyzing character development and the foundational elements of the “Hero’s Journey” plot structure.

Vocabulary & Grammar: We will utilize Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Achieve (Level A) and tackle nightly assignments from the Grammar for Writing textbook to refine composition skills.

Goal: Preparing students for the more complex writing demands of middle school.
ELA 7: Airborn by Kenneth Oppel
Our seventh-grade class will take to the skies with Kenneth Oppel’s high-flying adventure, Airborn. This coming-of-age story provides a rich backdrop for exploring heroic themes and world-building.

Focus: Developing perspective and the ability to articulate complex, thematic ideas.

Vocabulary & Grammar: Students will progress through Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Achieve (Level B) and engage in daily Grammar for Writing exercises.

Goal: Moving beyond the surface of the plot to discuss literature on a deeper, more conceptual level.
ELA 8: Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
In eighth grade, we are exploring the groundbreaking cyberpunk world of Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash. This sophisticated text allows us to examine the intersection of technology, linguistics, and culture.

Focus: Analyzing archetypes and moral lessons within a dystopian framework, specifically how language shapes society.

Vocabulary & Grammar: To prepare for the rigors of high school, students will work through Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Achieve (Level C) and nightly Grammar for Writing assignments.

Goal: Equipping students with the high-level literacy and workload management skills necessary for a successful transition to secondary education.
