Physical Education (Mr. Gill)

Dear Students and Families,

Mater Dolorosa Physical Education  April 2020

Growing up near Boston, one of my most favorite days in April was Patriot’s Day or Marathon Monday.  We would try to go to the 11:00am Red Sox game and then head over to the end of the marathon. It was an incredible sight to watch them finish after running/jogging walking 26.2 miles.

With that in mind, I would like my students and their families to participate in the MD marathon challenge. Starting April1, I would like my students and their families to walk 1 mile per day keeping social distancing. I havea map that you can put on the date that you walk 1 mile. If the weather is bad, try to walk the 5280 steps inside.

Easter weekend you will be off to count your blessings.

There are 30 days in April. Minus the 3 days for Easter weekend, you would complete the challenge by walking the .2 on April 30.

I will collect the map/data the next time we meet.

Do my warmup from March info.

Walk/jog/run 1 mile

Do cool down.

This should take about 30 minutes per day.

Make sure you keep track and post it on your sheet.

Good luck and have fun!!

Here are some activities you can do in your house:

Try to get 30 minutes or more of exercise everyday if possible.  If you are allowed to use your parents exercise equipment, try to get a 30 minute workout in.

All students can do our exercise warm-up to their own music:

-Alternate raising hands over your head
-2 handed stretch above head
-hold elbow with arm behind head
-turn and twist

Younger students-invisible hula hoop with hands on hips/hula hoops on knees.  Older students-hamstring stretch/quadricep stretch
Walking in place
Jogging in place
Circuit training-3 sets
10 sit ups
10 floor or wall pushups
30 second planks
10 burpees

With light weights or canned foods
10 bicep curls
10 tricep curls
10 chest press
10 shoulder pressStretch to cool down

Younger students can also practice rock/paper/scissors, simon sez.  Relaxation breathing-breathe in through your nose for a count of 3 and exhale through your mouth for a count of 5. Do this in a quiet area.

Another good way to exercise is to do some of the ones from above during commercials while
watching tv.

Please be safe and looking forward to when our MD family can be together!!!
